Humboldt wins bronze at 4A senior girls volleyball provincials

The Humboldt Collegiate Institute senior girls volleyball team came home from the 2021 SHSAA 4A provincials this past weekend in Moosomin with a bronze medal.

According to head coach Jarrod Regush, its been a few years since Humboldt has had this level of success.

“For the current time being, it means that our community has something to celebrate. I know it’s been a while since Humboldt has come back with a medal from provincials which is awesome that we’re able to bring that back to the community. It gives us something to celebrate,” Regush said.

This season was especially meaningful for the athletes who missed out on playing last year due to pandemic restrictions.

“It was significant, for a lot of players on the team, it would’ve been their last medal, potentially ever. We have six grade 12’s who are graduating and it was huge for them.”

Regush, however, has a lot of time left with the team. While he had previously served as assistant coach, this was his first year as head coach. He is hoping to build off this early success with the team, but was quick to give all the credit to his players.

“It’s honestly awesome. It’s a great experience as a coach, but honestly I’m just proud of the players on the team and their efforts they put through,” Regush said. “We had lots of early morning practices and the level of commitment and heart that the players showed was exceptional.”

Regush said it was awesome to not only see his team’s hard work and dedication pay off, but also to see the team’s reaction to winning the bronze medal.

“It was great to see. There was definitely a lot of emotions and stuff going on. They were just ecstatic to be able to come away with a medal from the weekend.”

Regush will continue to look to grow the sport in the off-season. He plans to coach a club team, as well as host training camps leading into next year and through the summer in an effort to build off the success Humboldt has now shown.
