Mustangs fall to Red Wings in shootout
The Melfort Mustangs played their third straight shootout on Friday as they took on the Red Wings in Weyburn.
It was also the Mustangs second straight shootout loss, falling short in a close 3-2 battle against the Red Wings. Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins said it was pretty close to a full effort, but two breakdowns costed them two goals, and ultimately the game.
“That was a good game tonight for us,” he said. “I thought we were really hard, couldn’t buy a goal. [We] missed the net a lot in the third, controlled the play a lot in the second, could have capitalized a bit more.”
Zac Somers opened the scoring for Melfort on a breakaway just over six minutes into the hockey game, but Weyburn responded about seven minutes later as Beau Larson broke up a play in the defensive zone and broke free on a breakaway to make it 1-1 after the opening frame.
