Another Shootout

Mustangs fall to Red Wings in shootout

Nov 27, 2021 | 11:26 AM

The Melfort Mustangs played their third straight shootout on Friday as they took on the Red Wings in Weyburn.

It was also the Mustangs second straight shootout loss, falling short in a close 3-2 battle against the Red Wings. Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins said it was pretty close to a full effort, but two breakdowns costed them two goals, and ultimately the game.

“That was a good game tonight for us,” he said. “I thought we were really hard, couldn’t buy a goal. [We] missed the net a lot in the third, controlled the play a lot in the second, could have capitalized a bit more.”

Zac Somers opened the scoring for Melfort on a breakaway just over six minutes into the hockey game, but Weyburn responded about seven minutes later as Beau Larson broke up a play in the defensive zone and broke free on a breakaway to make it 1-1 after the opening frame.

Nolan Doell scored his first goal as a Mustang on the powerplay in the second period and the Mustangs would retake the lead. It felt like at that point they were in control, but the Red Wings responded early in the first, courtesy of Braden Birnie. Nothing else would be solved until the shootout.

Weyburn’s Ty Mason was the only one to score in the shootout, giving the Red Wings their first win over Melfort this season.

Blevins added it was a good response after their 3-2 shootout loss to Melville on Wednesday and that the offence will eventually come.

“There wasn’t any passengers tonight for us,” Blevins said. “It was a hard game and credit to Weyburn, they did what they had to do. Worked hard, played great defensively, hung out in front of their goalie, blocked lots of shots.”

Melfort will get back in the saddle on Saturday, Nov. 27 as they visit the Estevan Bruins. You can hear that game on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett with the pregame show starting at 7:15 p.m.
