Mustangs looking for fifth win in a row in road contest against Millionaires

Dec 14, 2021 | 8:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have just three games remaining before their Christmas break, starting with a meeting with the Melville Millionaires on Tuesday.

The Mustangs are currently on a four game winning streak after winning both of their games this past weekend against Battlefords and Kindersley. Mustang forward Marco Lopez had a hat-trick against Kindersley and said the team is really starting to feel good.

“We’re very confident,” he said. “And we just want to keep this winning streak going, we’re looking really good on the ice and I feel like we’re playing hard.”

The Millionaires were the team the Mustangs started their winning streak against with a 5-2 win back on Dec. 4. However, the Mustangs have had some tight contests with the Millionaires this season, with a 3-2 overtime win back at the Warman Showcase in October, and a 3-2 shootout loss back in late November.

Lopez said the team knows who they’re up against, and even though the Millionaires are currently 11th place in the 12-team SJHL, they will need to be prepared.

“Anybody in this league can beat anybody on any given night,” Lopez said. “And we know that, we’re not going to take any teams lightly and we’re going to make sure we go in there with our best effort.”

Melfort is 17-9-1-4 on the season, good for 39 points and a tie for fourth place in the league.

Tuesday’s contest can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett from the Horizon Credit Union Centre in Melville. Puck drop is at 7 p.m., the pre-game show will precede that at 6:45 p.m.
