Mustangs extend win streak to five with win over Millionaires

Dec 15, 2021 | 8:36 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have now won five straight contests in the SJHL, immediately after losing five straight just a few weeks ago.

On Tuesday, the streak continued as the Mustangs defeated the Melville Millionaires 5-1 at the Horizon Credit Union Centre in Melville.

However, things did not start the way the Mustangs wanted as the Millionaires came out hard early and scored the first goal of the game just five minutes in courtesy of Nicolas Samson.

“Once we got a few shifts underneath us, and they got the first goal,” said Assistant Coach Dan Meyers. “But we responded right back at them and the score kind of shows that a little bit.”

Melfort then rattled off a pair of goals before the end of the first to make it 2-1. Carter Anderson scored a powerplay goal on a nice move in tight, while Tye Scherger knocked home a rebound in front to put the Mustangs up a goal through one.

Carter Anderson scored another one just two minutes into the second period when he knocked home a loose puck in front, giving Melfort the 3-1 lead.

Marco Lopez and Trenton Curtis each added to the lead in the third period. Meyers said it was pretty close to as complete of an effort they could get.

“We were just putting pucks to the net and guys were crashing to the net,” he said. “If any downfall tonight it’s that we took too many penalties.”

Melfort gave the Millionaires nine chances on the powerplay but did kill off all nine.

The win improves Melfort’s record to 18-9-1-4, good for 41 points and a three-way tie for third place in the SJHL with Battlefords and Flin Flon.

Melfort takes on the Nipawin Hawks in a home and home set this weekend.
