Rivalry Renewed

Mustangs ‘fired up’ for rivalry weekend against Hawks

Dec 17, 2021 | 9:56 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have just two games remaining before the Christmas break, but the games won’t be jolly in nature as the Nipawin Hawks come to town.

The hated rivals meet in a home and home set on Friday and Saturday to finish of the pre-Christmas schedule. Mustang forward Tye Scherger said the team is excited for a few battles with their biggest rivals and everyone is fired up.

“They’re a team that works hard, a full 60 minutes,” Scherger said. “They’re a team that plays hard and heavy and that’s what they preach so that’s what we’ve got to be ready for.”

It’ll be the third and fourth meetings of the season between the two clubs as they split the first home and home set back on October 1 and 2. Nipawin took game one in shootout, while the Mustangs earned a win in game two in regulation.

Melfort has won five straight contests heading into the weekend and Scherger said they’re going with a next man up mentality with injuries creating different lineups every night.

“It’s one of those things that when you get put in the lineup, you’re ready to go and you’re focused,” he said. “And I feel like we’re fired up here.”

The Hawks have won back-to-back games heading into the weekend and currently sit with a 12-14-0-5 record, good the eighth and final playoff spot in the league.

Melfort is 18-9-1-4 on the year, good for a tie for third place in the SJHL.
