Humboldt shortstop wins Minor Player of the Year

The U15 AAA East Central Dodgers were recently named the 2021 Baseball Sask Minor Team of the Year after having won both their league title and provincial championship.

Now, just a week later, their starting shortstop has been named the 2021 Baseball Sask Minor Player of the Year.

Cam Marshak, a 15-year old from Humboldt told northeastnow he was extremely happy to contribute to his team’s success this year.

“It was great,” he said. “All the work and the practice that we did as a team and working together and getting along all summer, it’s just an honour for sure.”

As far as his contributions were concerned, however, Marshak said it’s a team sport and only one player alone can’t do it all.

“I played shortstop,” he said. “It’s not just one of us, it’s all of us too.”

But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t extremely gracious when he heard his name called.

“A huge honour,” he said. “There’s a lot of other great players in the province, so just to be named that, it’s nice to see that hard work and dedication pay off. Even players on my own team that could have received this award. It’s great, I was very surprised and excited.”

And for a team where this was their first year together as an organization, Marshak said this year was better than he could have ever hoped for.

“It was definitely surprising,” he said. “It was the first year and lots of us had never even played together.”

Not only that, as Marshak mentioned how this season came off a year unlike any other.

“It definitely changed lots of young kids’ lives, just like me,” he said. “Sports is like the main thing, so not being able to do that for however long, definitely sucked a lot. It was great to feel as normal as possible and get back to playing on a normal stage.”

For Marshak, he also made sure to include his final thoughts as he thanked everyone involved and shared some words for next season.

“I’d just like to thank my coaches and the team for an amazing season,” he said. “Let’s go get ’em’ again next year!”
