Mustangs set to close out 2021, open 2022 against rival Hawks

Dec 31, 2021 | 9:00 AM

The hottest team in the SJHL returns from their Christmas Break looking to keep the fire going.

Thirteen days ago, the Mustangs finished up a home-and-home sweep of the Nipawin Hawks, defeating them 6-1 and 3-0 to head into the Christmas Break on a seven game winning streak.

Forward Marco Lopez said now that they’re back from the break, they need to focus on picking things up where they left off on Dec. 18.

“You get right in there, you do some battle drills, make sure you get the puck moving a little bit,” he said. “And just make sure you’ve got your chemistry when you come back.”

On Dec. 31, the Mustangs will welcome the Hawks to the Palace, while a New Years Day affair on Saturday will take place in Nipawin.

Melfort currently holds a 3-1 season series lead on the Hawks, and Lopez said it’s always a fun matchup against Nipawin.

“The rivalry is always there,” Lopez said. “And you always look forward to those games for sure.”

You can listen to Saturday’s game on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett. The pre-game show starts at 7:15 p.m. and the puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
