Youth Business Excellence Awards

Young entrepreneurs honoured at annual YBEX Awards in Tisdale

May 5, 2019 | 12:00 PM

The 18th Annual Youth Business Excellence (YBEX) Awards took place in Tisdale on Saturday, May 4 at the Civic Centre.

Young people from across the region received awards in a multitude of entrepreneurial categories. The winners received cheques ranging in value from $150 up to $350, and their associated school or group received a cheque for half of the winning value.

Trisha Garinger was one of the teachers in attendance. She teaches Entrepreneurship 7 at L.P. Miller Comprehensive School and had multiple students win awards at the event. She said it’s important for her to be part of the program so kids can look at what their future could look like.

“It’s a good thing for just young people to start to think about their future, and just to have something in place as a jumping off point,” Garinger told northeastNOW. “So this is a good program that they can participate in and get their feet wet that way.”

She said seeing her students win is a great feeling.

“Just to see the smiles on their faces when their name gets called and they get their cheques, they’re pretty excited about it,” Garinger said. “So it makes me feel very proud as a teacher.”

One of the big winners on the night was Gage Bacon, a grade 11 student at Kinistino School. His awards included an Agricultural Business Plan Award, and first place in the Individual Business Plan category for his business idea “Ripped Off Honey”. He also won an first place in the Group Business Plan category with his friend and Justin Mann for their business idea “Food on the Fly”.

Bacon said that his entrepreneurial gears started turning when he was in Ottawa for a business week with Mann and they got the idea from their teacher to submit something for the event. He said his idea for “Ripped Off Honey” stems from his family.

“My dad and grandpa are both beekeepers,” Bacon said. “So they have their hives and I’ve been working with them since I was young and I really enjoy working in the bees and I just want to sell honey that is Canadian honey.”

His business idea is to make a healthier honey by staying away from traditional sugars. Bacon also had a message for kids who may be on the fence with a business idea.

“I’d say to just pursue your dreams,” He said. “If you think it’s a good idea, go for it, because too many people don’t realize, if you don’t go for it, someone else will and you’ve lost out on your opportunity.”
