Itching to Play

Mustangs ready to hit the ice for first time in almost two weeks

Jan 14, 2022 | 9:48 AM

After 13 days and four postponed games, the Melfort Mustangs are set to hit the ice for game action in the SJHL.

On Friday, Jan. 14, the Mustangs host the Humboldt Broncos in their first game since a New Year’s Day victory against the Nipawin Hawks. Melfort was set to play La Ronge on Jan. 4, followed by the Flin Flon Bombers on Jan. 7 and 8, but those were postponed due to the Mustangs being shut down due to COVID-19. Then, their Jan. 11 contest against La Ronge was postponed due to the Ice Wolves entering a five-day COVID-19 pause.

Mustangs forward Seth McCulloch said it can be a bit frustrating waiting to play for so long.

“We’ve had a good week of practice, and the boys are ready to go for the weekend for sure,” he said. “Got the rust off after our little isolation stint there, and it should be a good weekend for us.”

Friday will mark a matchup of two premier teams in the SJHL as the Broncos sit in first place in the SJHL with a 28-10-0-0 record, and the Mustangs sit third at 22-9-1-4.

“Humboldt is a really good team,” McCulloch said. “But if we stick to our game, hit them, play physical, wear them down, I think we’ll come out on the right side of it.”

The weekend will be the final two meetings of the regular season between the two clubs. Humboldt won the previous home and home set back in October by 3-2 and 5-2 scores.

Melfort has also won nine games in a row heading into Friday, while the Broncos are 1-2-0-0 in January, but did win five straight to end 2021.

Game time both nights is 7:30 p.m., Friday is in Melfort, Saturday is in Humboldt. You can hear Saturday’s game on 105 CJVR with Tony Degerness providing play-by-play.
