Mustangs looking to get back to winning ways against division rival Bombers

Jan 21, 2022 | 4:28 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are looking to get back into the win column this weekend as they battle within the Sherwood Division.

The Mustangs, sitting in first place in the division, are set to meet the Flin Flon Bombers, currently second in the division, in a home and home set. The two rivals are separated by just two points, but the Bombers have four games in hand on the Mustangs.

“It’s pretty easy to get up for,” said Mustang goalie Joel Favreau. “We’ve had a couple tough games that we’re coming off, but we’re excited to try and get back on track against a divisional rival.”

Melfort fell 4-3 to the Estevan Bruins on Wednesday, Jan. 19 and prior to that, it was a 6-4 loss to the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Mustangs are 23-11-1-4 on the season, good for a tie for third place in the SJHL. The Bombers are 24-10-0-1, good for fifth place.

In the season series, the teams are tied with two wins each. The home team has also won all four games. Favreau said the team knows what they’re up against.

“They’re pretty skilled, they get right there in the rough stuff with us too,” he said. “Obviously playing in Flin Flon too, that home barn up there is a tough place to go play. So, it’ll be a big challenge for us but I know we’re up to it.”

Friday nights game will be at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, while Saturday’s will take place at the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon. That game can be heard on 105 CJVR.
