Hammond stays hot but Mustangs fall to North Stars in Battlefords

Feb 5, 2022 | 10:21 AM

The Melfort Mustangs opened their western road swing on Friday with a 5-3 loss to the Battlefords North Stars.

Melfort outshot the North Stars 31-26 in the contests, and while it felt like a back and forth game, Mustangs’ assistant coach Dan Meyers says they should have played much better.

“I don’t think in the first two periods we came with a lot of effort, we weren’t physical at all,” Meyers said. “Just kind of played with them.”

The Mustangs were down 3-1 heading into the third, with Carter Anderson scoring the lone Melfort goal. Curtis Hammond would bring the game back to 3-2 at the eight-minute mark of the third period, but it only lasted a minute and a half as Battlefords made it 4-2. Hammond put the team on his back once more as he scored his second of the night, and seventh in as many games to make it 4-3 with just over two minutes to play, but that’s as close as the Mustangs would get. Battlefords would score less than a minute later as the final dagger.

It was the final regular-season meeting between the two clubs as the North Stars end the series with a 3-1 edge.

Melfort is in Kindersley on Saturday night to take on the Klippers and Meyers said they’ll have to reset to avoid back-to-back losses.

“We’ve got to get back to hitting some bodies,” he said. “I think when we start hitting body we get into the game and just start playing better.”

Saturday’s game is on 105 CJVR starting with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m.
