Overtime Woes

Mustangs fall in yet another overtime affair, this time to Ice Wolves

Feb 12, 2022 | 10:08 AM

The Melfort Mustangs probably played well enough to earn two points and a win on Friday, Feb. 11 in La Ronge, but the Mustangs fell 3-2 in overtime to their Sherwood division rivals.

It was a game where it felt like Melfort carried play for most of the game, and the team thought so as well. Although, a late third period goal by the Ice Wolves, and a breakaway in overtime sealed the Mustangs fate.

“It’s sad because I figured the boys did put an honest effort in tonight,” said assistant coach Dan Meyers. “We were physical, we put pucks towards the net, we skated hard, we did everything we set out to do but just didn’t get a good outcome out of it.”

Aaron Greyeyes opened the scoring for La Ronge on their first shot of the game just 4:27 during a stretch where it felt Melfort was controlling play.

Melfort would respond about halfway through the third period thanks to a powerplay goal from Marco Lopez.

Dawson Leroux would give Melfort the lead early in the third with a shot from the right wing that found its was through a lane and passed Ice Wolves goalie Xavier Cannon.

Melfort held the lead right up until the just under three minutes to play as a scramble in front found the stick of Walker Jerome who tucked it by James Venne to tie the game up, forcing overtime.

In overtime, an Ice Wolves lost an edge in the Mustang zone, creating a chance the other way for Melfort, a pinch from a defenceman left Gavin Mattey open the other way and he would make no mistake on the breakaway to give La Ronge the 3-2 win.

The overtime loss was Melfort’s eight loss in extra time this season, second most in the SJHL. Meyers said they just have to keep sticking with the process.

“Just got to go again tomorrow night, and play another 60 minutes,” he said. “We do really need to find a way to win somehow, and I think it will start coming if we keep putting the work in.”

Melfort and La Ronge will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 12 in Melfort at the Northern Lights Palace.
