Mustangs fall behind early, storm back to defeat Klippers

Feb 26, 2022 | 9:05 AM

Through four minutes of Friday night’s SJHL game between the Melfort Mustangs and Kindersley Klippers, it looked like it might be all Klippers after Noah Lindsay scored two goals within a minute.

However, the Mustangs would recover for a 5-4 win.

Later in the period, the Mustang would storm back as Wyatt Day and Ben Tkachuk scored to tie things up for the home club.

Mustang forward Curtis Hammond said it’s hard to pinpoint why they came out of the gates so slow, but they woke up after falling down 2-0.

“I think we just started being calm with the puck, trusting each other and making the plays,” he said. “So, I think we just got back to working hard and doing the right things.”

In the second, Tylin Hilbig scored 1:31 into the frame, but that was the last time the Klippers would hold a lead in this one.

Marco Lopez tied the game shortly thereafter, and then Hammond took over and does what he does best, score big goals. The 20-year-old scored 25 seconds apart late in the second period to give Melfort the 5-3, a score that would hold until a minute remaining in the third when Kindersley would cut the lead in half, but couldn’t cut it anymore.

Hammond has been on fire over the month of February as he’s scored seven goals in eight games in the month. He also scored five goals at the end of January against Notre Dame.

The win on Friday was Melfort’s second in a row, and third in their last four contests. They improve to 28-15-4-5 on the year.

Melfort will visit La Ronge on Saturday night. You can hear that game on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett. The pregame show begins at 7:15 p.m.
