L.P. Miller badminton teams take home provincial medals

The Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association held its provincial badminton championships on the weekend, and a pair of teams from Nipawin took home some hardware.

The L.P. Miller Bears had a girls’ doubles team that ended up winning gold, and a boys’ doubles team won bronze. The girls’ team featured Kira Comfort (Grade 11) and Mikayla Woodword (Grade 11) while the boys’ team had Kyle Froehlich (Grade 11) and Colton Burke (Grade 12). Head Coach Kelly Byers said he was given some great multi-sport athletes to work with this season.

“To take them and put them into a sport that maybe they haven’t had as much exposure to was great,” Byers told northeastNOW. “And the fact that they won, shows their athletic abilities were tremendous.”

Comfort and Woodward were dominant in the provincial tournament, only losing one set all tournament. They were 3-0 in pool play, and then went on the beat John Paull II from North Battleford before beating Centennial Collegiate from Saskatoon in the final. Their only set loss came against John Paul II in the semi-finals.

Froehlich and Burke went 2-1 in pool play, losing to one of the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill High School teams from Regina. The got into the playoffs and defeated the other O’Neill team in the semifinal before beating the O’Neill team they had previously lost to in the final.

Byers said he hopes that this success helps continue building the program at L.P. Miller.

“This is very important for the young people to see that if you work hard, you’ll get the opportunity,” he said.

Byers added that the banners and medals are nice, but the main goal is to build young athletes, and build their character through these sports.
