Overtime Woes

Another overtime game has Mustangs down two games to one to Terriers

The Melfort Mustangs are now down two games to one in their SJHL quarterfinal series with the Yorkton Terriers.

On Tuesday, March 22, the Mustangs fell 2-1 to the Terriers in another overtime affair, and in a big time goaltenders battle.

Both teams fired 30-plus shots towards the opposing netminders, but nobody got on the board until just under eight minutes remained in the third period when Tye Scherger whacked away at a loose puck before it found its way past Terrier goalie Kael DePape.

“When we got that goal, we thought we had it to be honest because it was hard to get one on him,” said assistant coach Dan Meyers.

Parker Jasper would come right back for the Terriers and score his first of the playoffs. A long shot from the point found a lane through Mustang goaltender Joel Favreau to tie things up and force extra time.

DePape made a few fantastic saves for Yorkton, especially in overtime. He stopped 29 of 31 he saw in this one, but it felt like more as the Mustangs held pressure for a lot of the hockey game. Meyers said when going up against a goalie like this, they’ve got to keep shooting.

“Just have to keep throwing pucks on net, crashing the net,” he said. “And paying the price.”

In overtime, it was a sharp angle shot from the corner by Greg Nelson that squeaked by Favreau for the game-winning goal. Favreau in his own right was excellent, stopping 31 of 33 shots that came his way through three periods and overtime.

Game four of the best-of-seven series goes on Wednesday back in Yorkton. You can hear that one on 105 CJVR and cjvr.com. Pre-game show with Mat Barrett begins at 7:15 p.m.
