Broncos tied series 2-2 after win against Ice Wolves

There were a large number of penalties for both sides in Game 4 between the Humboldt Broncos and La Ronge Ice Wolves at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

“I think the refs started calling early in the game,” said Humboldt head coach Scott Barney, who’s team won 7-5 on Wednesday. “At least they were consistent with it, so it was nice to see for the first time all series.”

The Broncos took 38 penalty minutes with the majority occurring during the second period. The offences included two 10-minute misconducts, holding, tripping, roughing, interference, holding the stick and more. More than half of La Ronge’s 36 penalty minutes occurred in the third period for offences such as a 10-minute misconduct, too many men, charging, holding, slashing and more.

Shots at net were 43 on Ice Wolves and 26 on Broncos.

The Ice Wolves made three early goals by Ryley Morgan, Ethan Strik and Mkyllan Couture during the first period, but that lead was short-lived with the Broncos securing two goals by Noah Barlage and Amex Morozoff by the end of the 20 minutes. The Broncos would go on to score three more goals in the second period and the Ice Wolves put in two.

Two powerplay goals in the third period, both by Morozoff, gave the Broncos the edge to take Game 4. Game 5 is scheduled for March 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Humboldt’s Elgar Petersen Arena. The series is tied 2-2.

“The other night I think we had about one penalty and last night we had a bunch,” Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski said. “I guess there should be some consistency within the reffing as well. They should be on the same page and let the boys play and let the boys decide the outcome.”

Looking to Friday’s game, Kaminski said his team will need to be more disciplined and stay out of the penalty box. He noted the players need to continue to push pucks deep and put pressure on the Bronco’s defence.

“It’s crunch time,” Kaminski said. “You’ve got to suck it up and watch what you’re doing here, and everybody has to be way better than what we were last night.”
