Designs finished for new Carrot River school

Carrot River is one step closer to getting its new school.

The $21 million project, which will combine the community’s elementary and high schools into one building, was announced by the Saskatchewan government back in the summer of 2020.

Earlier this week, AODBT Architecture Interior Design released the concept renderings for the school after working with the province, stakeholders, as well as North East School Division staff and students.

Jason Hurd, principal architect and partner with AODBT, told northeastNOW the designs all center around a student commons area.

“It will be a double-height space with a lot of natural light but also kind of the heart of the building, everyone will kind of cross paths in that space at some point.”

The area is also being designed to be a formal learning space and gathering area.

The school will also be a state-of-the-art facility that focuses on 21st-century learning. A big focus is on space dedicated to classes that don’t rely on textbooks.

“We’re adding a second multi-purpose gym and performing arts space… as well as a fairly large industrial arts area,” added Hurd.

The art area will include a spot for carpentry classes.

Meanwhile, the project is currently accepting tenders from companies to build the school. After a company is chosen, construction will get started.

Hurd noted work should take between a year and a half to two years to complete.
