Hawks captain Beamin commits to York University

Nipawin Hawks captain Cole Beamin will continue his hockey career at York University in Toronto starting next season.

The university made the announcement on its social media channels on Monday.

Beamin played four years in Nipawin for the Hawks, he said finalizing his post-secondary destination is exciting.

“I’m pretty pumped for it. It will be a big move but it will be fun,” he told northeastNOW.

Beamin, 20, started his junior career with the Prince George Cougars in the Western Hockey League after the British Columbia based team drafted Beamin. He played parts of three seasons in Prince George before returning to Nipawin in the 2019-20 season. The defenseman went on to play 127 games as a Hawk collecting seven goals and 20 assists. Beamin also dressed for four playoff games in his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League career. He said playing USports hockey was his goal following his start in the WHL.

“It might not have been the route I thought I was going to go to get there but I got there. It will be good,” he said.

Beamin’s career in Nipawin started with a bang, he scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over the Humboldt Broncos on Sept. 12, 2019. The game was broadcasted on TSN to commemorate the return of the Broncos following the team’s bus crash. Four years later he was able to continue his playing career at York with the Lions.

“It’s one of the best business schools, I think one of the top-10 in Canada so that’s something I wanted to go into,” he said. “It seems like they have a good club, they move guys through, if you want to play pro they have connections. They have a good coach and facilities there, they kind of give you all the tools.”

Beamin’s career with the Hawks ended with him being named the team’s most valuable player. He said his junior chapter was crucial for his success and the work starts for the next four-year stint of his playing career.

“Signing the paper, it was relieving. It took some weight off my shoulders, it’s done now and now I can focus on training, skating, and getting ready for the season,” he said.
