The Melfort Mustangs will welcome another recruit to their roster for next season.

The SJHL club announced that 2004-born defenceman Ty Thornton has committed to the Mustangs for the 2022/23 campaign.

“Ty is a well-rounded defenceman, that sees the game extremely well,” said Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins. “His combination of size and skill should suit him well in the SJHL.”

Thornton has spent the last two seasons with the Sherwood Park Kings U18 AAA of the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL).

The blueliner scored eight goals for the Kings this past season and added eight more assists in 38 games.

Those eight goals were tied for sixth-most on the team and the most among defencemen. Thornton also tallied three assists in five playoff games.

During the shortened 2020/2021 season, Thornton scored one goal and an assist in five games for the Kings.
