Boston Marathon no match for Melfort woman who completes it for third time

Apr 19, 2022 | 5:00 PM

A Melfort woman is enjoying some well-earned rest after finishing the Boston Marathon.

Robyn Luthi was one of the thousands from across the globe who competed on Monday in one of the most famous races.

Coming in at a time of 3:09:13, she was one of the first women in her age category to cross the finish line.

This was also just eight seconds off her fastest run ever.

“It’s uphill or downhill the whole way, so I wasn’t expecting to run so close to my personal best,” said Luthi.

She was still a bit disappointed she couldn’t set a record.

Despite this, the emotions felt crossing the line were overwhelming. Luthi noted no matter the race and how long it takes to finish, the result is always the same.

“It’s tears of joy, tears of exhaustion, it’s something hard to explain unless you’ve put in the hard work to get there.”

She previously finished the marathon in 2018 and 2019, as well as qualified for the 2020 competition which ended up being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, one of the best experiences to coincide with the race is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

This is especially true for Luthi who added she has fun trying to explain where she’s coming from.

“I always giggle because people cannot pronounce Saskatchewan or even know where it is in Canada. I got asked many times is it by Toronto and how close to Banff.”

Luthi ended up qualifying for the race through the Chicago Marathon.

The two races are a part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors with the others being the New York Marathon, Berlin Marathon, the TCS London Marathon, and the Tokyo Marathon.

Luthi’s goal is to finish the six races. Next on the list is the Berlin Marathon as she’s already qualified for the race taking place this September.
