Melfort U19 Spirit softball team hosting first invitational tournament

For the first time ever, the Melfort U19 Spirit will host its own invitational tournament at the Spruce Haven diamonds.

The two-day tournament will feature the U19 Spirit, along with teams from Assiniboia, Humboldt, and Regina.

Conrad Paskell, head coach of the U19 Spirit, told northeastNOW they wanted to host their own tournament as they consistently travel across the province.

“That’s what it’s really all about. To give the local people a chance to watch these girls play without travelling three or four hours that we do travel to play elsewhere,” Paskell said. “It’ll be a really unique opportunity for everyone to come out and see what these girls can do.”

While they’ve had to wait for the snow and ice to melt, the U19 Spirit practiced indoors since January before they made the move outside. They’ve won tournaments in Canwood and North Battleford, and recently lost in the final of the Sharon Knott Tournament in Regina.

Paskell said their tournament will be a chance to get ready for the provincial softball tournament in July, but that doesn’t mean this one doesn’t count.

“Our tournament is mostly home pride at stake,” he said.

The U19 Spirit along with the three other teams will play three games each on Saturday, June 1 to determine the tournament bracket seeds. The semifinals and gold medal game will be played on Sunday, June 2.
