Melfort Show and Shine returning to Father’s Day weekend

May 24, 2022 | 1:22 PM

The 32nd annual Melfort Show and Shine is back this year, along with being back to its typical time of year.

The event, which hasn’t been held in its usual Father’s Day weekend slot since 2019 due to COVID cancellations and postponements, is officially set to return.

According to Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce (MTACC) Executive Director Cam Lee, the event will be almost exactly the same as last year, which was held in August, just with more cars and more daylight.

“Last year, we had over 100 cars, we hope to have that many or more this year, over 100 vehicles of all shapes, sizes, colours and everything, just vintage vehicles all the way up to modern vehicles,” he said. “People showing off their love of their vehicles, it’s just a great time to come around and walk through all the variety of vehicles there.”

The event will feature all the vehicles lined up down Main Street, with various food booths and raffles as well. It is set to begin on June 17 at 4:00 p.m., with vehicle registration starting at 3:00 p.m., and will continue until 9:00 that night.

Registration will cost $10 per vehicle while there is no cost to those who wish to attend.

There will also be a variety of prizes, awards and trophies for multiple categories featuring the best vehicles.

All proceeds will go towards the day-to-day operations of the MTACC, which Lee said, along with the event itself, is to promote business in the city and bring those who aren’t from around here to enjoy all Melfort has to offer.

“It’s just trying to bring people that don’t normally come to Melfort a lot, to Melfort to experience what the community has to offer, what local business has to offer and what we’re all about here in Melfort. People that don’t normally come to Melfort all that often to stop by and have a meal or stop and shop a little bit and then enter their vehicles into the contest and go from there.”

“I think just putting a spotlight on Melfort is the big thing and local businesses as well,” said Lee.

“Some will stay open a little longer than normal and some won’t, but that’s fine too. Even just people driving by and saying, ‘oh, I didn’t know that store was here, oh, I’ll have to check that out the next time I’m in town’, that’s huge for the community. Just even having the ability to just walk up the three or four blocks or whatever it is we occupy, just seeing what there is out there, hey, there’s the library over there or whatnot, that’s big.”

Along with the date returning to normal, there will be a slight change of location, with the event moving a block north, to allow for easier traffic flow down Saskatchewan Drive, along with easier access to parking.

Lee also said there is still a need for more volunteers and that he is able to be contacted by phone at 306-921-3273 or by email at trademelfort@melfort.ca
