The Melfort Mustangs’ off-season is heating up, as they have bolstered their forward group for the second consecutive day.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Mustangs would be adding 2003-born ‘power forward’ Christian Mealey.

Today, however, they added another ‘big star’ in 6-3, 185 lb David Rioux.

The Lorraine, Que. product spent this past season with the Westlake Bourget College Volts U18 Prep team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). In just 31 games, Rioux finished third in the league with 53 points and tied for second in goals with 21.

Those staggering numbers resulted in the team lead in assists for Rioux, with 32, as well as second in both goals and points.

In a press release sent to northeastnow, head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins spoke about his newest addition.

“David is a player with size and skill who protects the puck well, and makes plays with his vision,” said Blevins. “We’re excited to welcome him to Melfort.”

Rioux also added four assists in three playoff games earlier this year and spent his 2019/20 season, playing 28 games for College St. Sacrement, netting 12 goals and racking up seven assists for a total of 19 points.

After last season’s disappointing seven-game first-round series loss to the underdog Yorkton Terriers, this is already the fifth commit for Melfort, two being prior to the season’s end, in what can be expected to be a productive and entertaining summer of both additions and acquisitions.
