Riley Ashe, 10th overall pick, commits to Melfort

The Melfort Mustangs have announced its most recent first-round draft pick will be joining the team this fall.

Riley Ashe, a 2006-born forward and 10th overall selection in the 2022 SJHL Bantam Draft, this past Friday has officially committed to the blue and green.

The Warman, Sask. product, has a history with the Mustangs, previously suiting up for the club during a 6-1 pre-season win against the rival Nipawin Hawks, in what was part of a special “call-up”, this past September.

He would go on to score the first goal of the game (on his first shot), while assisting on the second and finishing the night as the player of the game, something Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins can only hope for more of this season.

“We’re very excited to add our 2022 first-round pick into our lineup immediately,” said Blevins. “Although young in age, Riley is a talented player with great vision and we expect Riley to play a big role on our team and he will have the opportunity to succeed at this level. Riley has already had some Division I NCAA interest and having that exposure will be great for our program moving forward.”

The 6’, 161 lbs forward spent this past season with the Saskatoon Blazers in Saskatchewan’s U18 AAA league. In 43 regular-season games, he scored nine goals and added 18 assists for 27 points. He would also go on to add two assists in seven postseason games.

Prior to joining the Blazers, Ashed played parts of three seasons with the Warman Wildcats U15 AA squad. In 44 regular season and playoff games, he scored 31 goals and added 28 assists for 56 points.
