Melfort RCMP has new staff sergeant and detachment commander

Aug 10, 2022 | 2:17 PM

Darren Simons is the new staff sergeant and detachment commander for the Melfort RCMP.

Simons has 32 years of experience as a Royal Canadian Mounted police officer, as well as having served some time in the army, transferring to Melfort from Blaine Lake.

He has spent time in Calgary, Ottawa, Victoria, Germany, Chilliwack, Quebec, Gagetown, Edmonton, Montreal, Regina, Vermilion, Assumption, Tuktoyaktuk, Fort Liard, Alberta, Boyle, Lac la Biche, Hudson Bay and Carlyle.

Simons told northeastNOW that moving to Melfort is a bit of a homecoming for him.

“It feels really good,” he said. “I’ve never lived here, but my mom’s from Star City originally. We always came to Star City to visit and to Kipabiskau Lake, I have probably been there almost every year of my life.

“I used to watch the Melfort parade when I was here and I’ve actually marched in it before. It’s always been home. It’s kind of neat to come somewhere and have a good idea of where the communities are and what the communities are about and a lot of the history.”

According to Simons, this will be his final posting before he retires, however, he doesn’t know yet when that time will come.

All he knows is that he wants to do the best he can and enjoy it while it lasts.

“There’s the joke, three bad days in a row and I should start taking Wednesdays off. I’m gonna keep doing it till I’m not having fun anymore. I’m still having fun imparting my knowledge and experience on the junior members. I don’t mind being challenged, I don’t mind being involved in the community and my wife and I both like this part of the country.”

And this job won’t come without challenges, especially with the current staffing shortages.

This job, however, was one Simons got to choose and he explained he’s very happy he did.

“I didn’t expect it to come up, there weren’t a lot of positions for a staff sergeant, but this was one of them. The goal is to make sure the members stay safe and don’t get burnt out and that we can still provide a good service to the community and deal with calls for service and increase our proactive patrolling if possible.”

“My focus is just to try and make sure the members learn, develop and stay safe and the community gets the service they deserve.”
