Governor General to participate in Regina’s Miyo-wîcîwitowin Day event

Canada’s Governor General will be one of the speakers Thursday during Miyo-wîcîwitowin Day at Mosaic Stadium.

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon’s participation in the event was announced Tuesday by the organizing committee.

Doors are to open at 9 a.m., with the Miyo-wîcîwitowin Day event slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.

Simon is scheduled to speak at 10:39 a.m., right before Saskatchewan Lt.-Gov. Russ Mirasty.

The inaugural Miyo-wîcîwitowin Day is being held to recognize the harm done to Indigenous people through residential schools and colonialism.

“For the first time ever, 18,000 high school students, business leaders and the general public will gather in one place to discuss the impact of residential schools and the importance of implementing the 94 calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” the organizing committee said in a media release.

“The day is expected to be very powerful with stories of survival a part of the event.”

The four-hour program will feature speakers and entertainment. At around 1:05 p.m., four Royal Canadian Air Force CT-155 Hawk training jets from 15 Wing Moose Jaw will perform a flyover at Mosaic Stadium.
