Sep 30, 2022 | 9:11 AM

The Melfort Mustangs will get some home cooking this weekend as they return from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Showcase in Warman, Sask.

The Mustangs would open their showcase on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over the Notre Dame Hounds, led by a 29 save shutout by Joel Favreau and two points from Dawson Leroux.

On Wednesday, Melfort would then fall to the Battlefords North Stars 2-0 in a heavy defensive battle and goaltenders duel. Joel Favreau stopped 25 of 26 shots in that one for the Mustangs.

Mustangs Assistant Captain, and co-leader in scoring, defenceman Leith Olafson says while both games were early in the morning, 10:30 a.m. starts to be exact, the team performed through tough circumstances.

“I think the team handled it pretty well,” Olafson said. “Both games were pretty solid.”

Heading into the weekend, Melfort will see the North Stars on Friday, followed by a Saturday night meeting with Notre Dame at the Northern Lights Palace. Olafson said seeing the teams again in such an short time should prepare them better, especially for Battlefords.

“Knowing them well will be good now, we kind of know what Battlefords is going to bring on Friday night,” he said. “We know they’re a fast team so I think we can handle them better this next time.”

Battlefords has been nearly unstoppable through the first month of the season, going 6-0-0-0. They’ve allowed a league-low eight goals, and have scored 31 goals, good for second most in the SJHL.

Notre Dame is 1-4-0-0 through five games and have the worst goal differential in the league at minus-14.

Melfort is 2-3-1-0 through six games on the year and has an even goal differential, scoring 15 goals and allowing 15 as well.

Puck drop both nights at the Palace is at 7:30 p.m.
