A member of the Melfort Mustangs and the Humboldt Broncos have earned themselves a spot on the most-recent SJHL (Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League) players of the week list.

Direct West Rookie of the Week: One of the new faces of the Melfort Mustangs is making a significant impact early on this SJHL season. Through eight games this season, 2006-born forward Riley Ashe already has three goals and two assists for the Mustangs, which included a two-goal night against the Notre Dame Hounds Saturday evening. SGEU MVP of the Week: Meanwhile, it has been an extremely impressive start to the season for the Humboldt Broncos as they sit at 8-0-0-0 going into a week off for the club. A big reason why the team remains undefeated is the play of their Captain, Ethan Zielke. In a jam-packed week for the Broncos, which saw them take to the ice five times, the Lindenwood University commit registered four goals and seven assists helping Humboldt remain perfect. Zielke also goes into this week at the top of the league in scoring with 14 points. Weekly Stats (5GP, 4g-7a, 11pts)

As for Melfort, they released their own three stars of the month for September. The first month of the SJHL season saw the Mustangs go 2-3-2-0, gathering six points in the standings.

First Star: Dawson Leroux (7gp, 3G, 4A, 7Pts)

The newly minted assistant captain was an offensive leader for the Mustangs in September, scoring three goals and adding four assists, with no teammate outscoring him in that stretch. The Lethbridge product had points in five of seven games in September, including a streak of four straight games with at least one point.

Second Star: Leith Olafson (7gp, 4G, 2A, 6Pts)

After scoring just three goals in 46 games in his rookie season, defenceman Leith Olafson burst into the season with four goals through his first seven games, which led his squad. The also newly minted assistant captain had a streak of four straight games with a goal between Sept. 17 and Sept. 27. No other SJHL defencemen had more goals than Olafson in the month of September.

Third Star: Joel Favreau (7gp, 2-2-2, 2.38 GAA, .915 sv%, 1 shutout)

After a stellar SJHL playoff performance in March, Joel Favreau has continued right where he left off to start the 2022/2023 SJHL season. The 20-year-old played in all seven games in September, earning a 2-2-2 record with a 2.38 goals-against-average, and a .915 save percentage. He also tallied his first shutout of the season with a 29-save performance at the SJHL showcase against Notre Dame.

Melfort is back in action, tonight when they visit the Melville Millionaires, while Humboldt doesn’t play until next Tuesday when they host the Ice Wolves.
