Getting Back on Track

Mustangs set to meet Ice Wolves, Bruins in weekend set

Oct 7, 2022 | 9:38 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are hoping they can get back into the win column this weekend with a game on the road and a game at home.

Melfort will visit the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday, Oct 7, and then host the Estevan Bruins on Oct 8, looking to improve on their 3-3-3-0 record through nine games this season.

Dawson Leroux has been the most steady and consistent member of the Mustangs, scoring nine points in nine games this season, and said they need to focus on stringing together good efforts night in and night out.

“We had two good practices this week after that Melville game [on Tuesday],” Leroux said. “And we’re looking for a big four-point weekend to get back on track.”

Melfort lost 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday to Melville, after a dominating 6-1 win over Notre Dame just six days ago. Melfort has not won back-to-back games yet this season.

Heading on the road to La Ronge won’t be an easy task for the Mustangs, but Leroux says they’re ready for the difficulties that the Mel Hegland Uniplex presents.

“There’s not as much possession as there usually is in the bigger rinks like our rink and stuff,” he said. “But there will be a lot of physicality, and we like that stuff, that’s what we’re looking for.”

The Ice Wolves are just two points back of Melfort in the early going, while Estevan is 4-6-0-0 through 10 games this season.
