Late Lead Lost

Mustangs fall in back and forth thriller to Hounds

The Melfort Mustangs have lost their fourth straight game after a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday night in Wilcox.

It’s the Mustangs second straight one goal loss, and third during this four game skid. Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said it’s frustrating to continue giving up close games like this.

“We’re not getting a full 60 minutes in,” he said. “And we’ve got to get right back at it to work ethics.”

The Mustangs fell behind first in this one, but it wasn’t until the second period as Rocsyn Bird and Carson Baylis both capitalized on Mustang mistakes at the Hounds blue line to make it a 2-0 game just two-and-a-half minutes into the second period.

However, the Mustangs showed some resilience and battled back to make it a 2-1 game late in the second thanks to Aidyn Hutchinson’s third of the season.

That goal was added onto by Kevin Minnoch who scored a powerplay goal less than a minute into the third period to tie things up with lots of time to go. About eight minutes later, Zac Somers capitalized off a puck that took a strange bounce off the boards and through the slot where Somers put it home to give Melfort their first lead of the game.

However, a missed assignment in the Mustangs zone led Dane Probe wide open to beat James Venne and tie the game up. With both teams battling and getting some chances late, it seemed as though another overtime would be in the cards for the Mustangs. But a sharp angle shot from Antoine Saint-Onge found its way by James Venne to give Notre Dame the lead with less than three minutes to play. The Mustangs pushed late, but could not get one past Tucker Inabinet who stopped 38 of 41 shots he saw on the night.

James Venne stopped 29 of 33 for the Mustangs.

Meyers said it’s been a difficult stretch, but they hope that the work they put in will help them get through it.

“Every team will go through adversity through the year,” Meyers said. “And I’m just hoping this is ours right now and we’re going to figure it all out.”

Melfort falls to 3-5-4-0 on the season and are back in action on Friday night when they visit the Battlefords North Stars.
