Mustangs getting back to basics ahead of weekend set against Bruins

Oct 21, 2022 | 10:30 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are back at home for a pair of games as they look to get back into the win column after a 1-1 weekend in Battlefords and Kindersley.

The Mustangs beat the previously undefeated Battlefords North Stars 2-1 in a shootout on Friday, Oct. 14, but would follow that up with a 7-4 loss to the Kindersley Klippers who had one win on the season heading into that contest.

Melfort has not won back-to-back games but has also not lost back-to-back games in regulation this season. Assistant Captain Leith Olafson says this week has been a good week for the team to get back to basics.

“Went over all of our systems again, had some light skates, some system skates,” Olafson said. “Just to get all on the same page again.”

The Mustangs will host the Estevan Bruins on Friday and Saturday this weekend for the second and third times this season. Their last meeting was in Melfort on Oct. 8, a 3-2 overtime decision that went to the Bruins.

Olafson says the confidence is there for the team after their last performance.

“If we execute our systems, I think we’ll do well against them,” he said. “Last time we played them, we didn’t play too well and we still stayed in the game with them, so I think we can have a really good two games against them.”

Melfort is 4-6-4-0 on the season and is currently in the eighth and final playoff spot, but are also tied with sixth place Yorkton and seventh place Nipawin. The Bruins are 8-7-0-0 on the year and have won seven of their last eight games.

Both games at the Palace start at 7:30 p.m..
