Melfort runner now halfway to completing world’s major marathons

A Melfort woman is one step closer to finishing all the Abbott World Marathon Majors.

Robyn Luthi competed in last month’s Berlin Marathon after qualifying through a lottery.

She finished the race at 3:04:35 which was four and a half minutes faster than her previous best.

“The Berlin course is extremely flat, it’s a very fast course,” Luthi said. “Actually, the day I ran the world record was set.”

Out of the 11,509 women who competed, Luthi finished with the 235th best time. This puts her in the top two per cent for her gender.

She explained she’s been able to build off previous races which have helped her set new personal records.

The Berlin Marathon is the third of six races apart of the Abbott World Marathon Majors that she’s finished, joining Boston and Chicago.

Unlike her previous experiences at major races, Luthi noted she didn’t get the chance to interact with a lot of other racers.

“Wasn’t a lot of conversation at the start of the race like there has been in the past when I’ve been at Chicago or Boston, and it’s been more North American English-speaking people there.”

The last three majors she needs are the TCS London Marathon, New York Marathon, and Tokyo Marathon. Luthi has put her name in a lottery to compete in London, while she also plans on competing at the next race in New York.

Until then, her plan is to make sure she remains in tip-top shape.

“I’ll pick up some races in Saskatchewan just to keep my fitness level where it needs to be.”
