Melfort Curling Club announces new mural in the works

The Melfort Curling Club has made one of the most important first decisions for their upcoming mural project… who will paint it.

Local artist Carla Tyacke has been chosen, as she brings great previous experience, having painted the ‘poppy mural‘ for the Melfort Legion.

But according to the club’s revitalization project chair, that wasn’t even the main reason she was chosen.

“The key thing was her willingness to mentor some students, and that’s gonna be another part of this project, we’re gonna have a student or two helping her actually paint the mural,” said Kerrie DeGooijer.

Since the mural announcement was made as part of the revitalization project, the public has been asked to send their ideas about what the mural should look like. This included some talks at the 50th-anniversary celebration.

“We invited all the people in attendance to draw some ideas and there were quite a few ideas that came about from that,” added DeGooijer.

“Just a way to really get the community involved in what they think should be included, because this is going to be on the exterior, close to downtown, across from the library and the Palace, so it’s not just the curling rink, it’s gonna be a community mural, as well.”

As for the artist herself, this is a big deal for her, as well, as this is her community.

She told northeastNOW it’s been a warm feeling to know how much her poppies were enjoyed and she hopes she can accomplish the same thing through this project.

“I just love to paint and create,” said Tyacke. “It means a lot to kind of bring it together with all the things that are significant for the community and this area. I’m just really excited to do it”

So far she explained her ideas include curling, northern lights, agriculture, different parts of the city, the nearby forests and rivers, and the different cultures in the area being represented by a pair of hands that are interconnected with each other, as they wrap around the entire mural.

The work is expected to begin sometime next spring, and in the meantime, the club looks to fundraise for the project through a raffle.

They also received a $1,000 grant, courtesy of Saskatchewan Arts.
