Looking for Revenge

Mustangs make trip to La Ronge with revenge on the mind

Oct 29, 2022 | 9:24 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are set to meet up with the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday, Oct. 29.

It’ll be the first time the Sherwood Divison rivals have met since the Ice Wolves dismantled the Mustangs by a 7-2 score on Oct. 7 in La Ronge.

Mustang forward Dawson Leroux says there’s definitely a sour taste still in their mouths as they head back north.

“It’s definitely been in the back of all our minds, ever since that game that wasn’t so good,” he said. “So, we’re definitely looking forward to getting back there, get it done, and figure it out.”

It seems to be a good time to head back there for the Mustangs as they’ve just wrapped up a stretch of three straight games at home, winning all of them over Estevan twice, and Weyburn on Wednesday. On top of three wins in a row, they’ve won four of their last five dating back to the 2-1 shootout victory over the Battlefords North Stars.

Leroux said they’ve tried to simplify things over the last little while.

“We’ve been bringing it back to the drawing board a bit, doing a lot of stuff off the ice and getting our confidence up,” Leroux said. “Taking it shift by shift, period by period, and it seems to be working a bit better.”

Melfort has climbed up to fifth in the SJHL standings during this stretch and are just one point back of the Ice Wolves for second in the Sherwood Division, and fifth in the SJHL. Flin Flon’s win on Friday night has put them ahead of La Ronge and Melfort by three and four points respectively for first in the Sherwood, and third in the SJHL.

Game time on Saturday night is 7:30 p.m. at the Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge. You can catch all the action on 105CJVR with Mat Barrett. The pregame show begins at 7:15 p.m.
