Kinistino gets recognized for ‘Generous Involvement of Past & Present Residents’

The Town of Kinistino and the Kinistino Communities in Bloom recently participated in their first national competition, since 2019.

The group participated in the Class of Champions (Small) category, against the Village of Pugwash, NS.

“We hadn’t really participated the last couple of years just because it wasn’t in person, so this year was our first year in person, after a couple year hiatus,” said Chair Angie Bragg.

The Town ultimately finished with a 5-bloom-bronze rating, which is a score of 84-86.9%.

Unfortunately, they fell just short of winning, as Pugwash finished with a 5-bloom-silver rating, a score of 87-89.9%.

Despite finishing runner-up, Bragg told northeastNOW there are still a lot of positives that come out of competing.

“There’s not a lot of towns of 800 people that can say it competes against other places across Canada. It just puts us on the map and we have pride in our place and what it looks like.”

For Kinistino, while they have been ‘out of the battle’ for a few years, they’ve still been getting things done around the community.

Projects included the community centre, Kinsmen park, a play centre, a seating area for picnic tables and an outdoor volleyball and basketball court.

“We never really kind of took a break from it, we just kept going and doing our own thing, but this year, we had to go above and beyond.”

One of the key points to this year’s competition was the special mentions/recognitions for each participating community.

For Kinistino, it was their ‘Generous Involvement of Past & Present Residents’.

“A lot of money has come into our community, just from people who used to live here… when you drive around town, everything is nice and tidy and kept. People do take pride in their yards, so everything looks pretty good. There’s not a lot of vandalism or graffiti or anything like that.”

The town is already looking forward to next year, hoping to secure its first national title since 2015.
