Mustangs fall behind early against Bombers, respond for fifth win in a row

Nov 26, 2022 | 9:10 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are winners of five straight games after a 6-3 win over the Flin Flon Bombers on Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

It certainly wasn’t the prettiest win of the Mustangs season, but a win nonetheless. Kylynn Olafson, and Cole Tanchuk scored before 10 minutes had passed for Flin Flon to give them the early 2-0 lead. The Bombers would outshoot Melfort 14-9 in the first, but it was tied 2-2 after one as Zac Somers and Cam Emigh each scored for the Mustangs.

Assistant Captain Dawson Leroux said they know it wasn’t their best period, but they recovered well the rest of the way.

“We were real confident heading into the second and third,” Leroux said. “And it showed on the ice.”

Zac Somers would give Melfort their first lead of the night just about three minutes into the second period before Flin Flon tied it just two minutes later. However, the Mustangs would pull away after that as Leroux would score at the 7:34 mark of the second for the game-winning goal. Aidyn Hutchinson and Leroux would add empty netters to seal the deal in the third for Melfort.

With the back half of the home and home set for Flin Flon tomorrow night, Leroux said they know they’ll have to be better.

“Definitely got to step it up,” he said. “That barns a hard one to win in and we know that. So, we’re going to go into tomorrow ready, and play a full sixty.”

Melfort improves to 12-8-4-0 on the season, while Flin Flon drops to 15-6-2-1 on the season.
