Streak Snapped

Mustangs fall in wild overtime duel in Flin Flon

Nov 27, 2022 | 10:30 AM

The Melfort Mustangs win streak has ended at five games.

However, the Mustangs still earned a point as they lost in overtime 5-4 to the Flin Flon Bombers 5-4 on Saturday night.

It was a high-paced affair with Flin Flon outshooting Melfort 33-15 through two periods, but it was Melfort who had the lone goal, courtesy of Zac Somers 13th of the season.

Melfort would hold on to that lead, with some great play in goal by James Venne, until the third period when the Bombers turn the game on its head quickly. Jaxon Martens and Cole Duperreault scored 25 seconds apart to give Flin Flon their first lead of the night.

“I thought we played good, and then all of a sudden we’d go missing for 10 minutes,” said Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers. “I don’t know, it was a back-and-forth game on both teams I thought.”

And back and forth they went in the third period as Alex Mack’s first career SJHL goal would tie the game once again for the Mustangs.

Duperreault’s second of the night, and Jeremi Tremblay would add two more to make it 4-2 with just over five minutes to play in the third period. However, that didn’t stop the visiting Mustangs who would score with the empty net twice in the final two-plus minutes. Somers second of the night made it 4-3, and then with less than a minute to play, Ryan Duguay tipped home a point shot to force overtime between the Sherwood Division rivals.

However, in overtime, some sustained zone time for Melfort led to David Rioux getting by his man and cutting to the net before getting hauled down with no penalty call from the referees. The puck would head back the other way and Duperreault would make no mistake on his hat-trick goal to give the Bombers the win.

Melfort was outshot on the night 52-26 on the night, and while they were missing players like Captain Ben Tkachuk, and Assistant Captains Clarke Huxley and Leith Olafson, Meyers said he’s pleased with how they battled.

“Boys did real good,” he said. “We got three out of four points this weekend and lots of guys missing out of our lineup, so I say it’s still a win.”

Melfort falls to 12-8-5-0 on the season and are back in action on Friday, Dec. 2 hosting Yorkton for Teddy Bear Toss night.
