A volleyball player from Muenster is getting a national award following his performance at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

Skyler Varga is one of two athletes receiving the Roland Michener Award from the Canada Games Council (CGC) for his leadership, cooperation, and excellence on and off the field. A male and a female are chosen for the award after every installment of the Games.

He explained he was “blown away” when he found out he was chosen.

“I’m extremely honoured to receive such a prestigious award,” he said. “Reading the list of previous winners was such a surreal feeling, especially seeing that the last Summer Games male athlete from Saskatchewan to win this award was in 2001.”

That athlete was Carmel native Ryan Schedlosky who won a gold medal in wrestling.

Varga, who was the captain of Team Saskatchewan’s men’s indoor volleyball team, played a big part in securing the gold medal during the Games this past August in Niagara, Ontario.

“It’s a memory that I’ll forever cherish with my teammates, coaches, friends, and family,” he said. “I hope to one day compete at the Olympics and being a part of the Canada Summer Games was a stepping stone to achieve that goal.”

The 2022 female winner of the Roland Michener Award is Ava Carew, a member of Team Nova Scotia’s canoe-kayak team, who earned a gold medal in the C-2 1000 m race and a silver medal in the IC-4 200 m race.
