Saskatchewan’s Snowmobile Association reminds those heading out to enjoy the mild temperatures to remember to stay safe.

January 15-21 marks the Provincial Snowmobile Safety Week in the province and the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association is sharing tips on how to make snowmobile fun, safe and family friendly.

With over 11,000 km of groomed and maintained trails in the province, Snow Mobile Safety Week recognizes the dedicated work that volunteers around Saskatchewan do to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy the winter sport.

Minister Don Morgan said in a release that safe snowmobiling starts with recognizing your own capabilities. This means assessing terrain, adjusting speed and never using drugs or alcohol prior to operating a snowmobile.

“Always wear a helmet and adequate clothing, stay within designated riding areas, and always snowmobile with another person, never alone,” he said.

With winter weather comes winter preparedness, similar to that of preparing a winter safety kit in your car.

Packing a spare belt, spark plugs and tool kits is essential in case of technical emergencies. The tool should be accompanied by a basic first aid kit, food, water, matches, flashlights, extra batteries, and something to make a shelter.

The most critical tip from Saskatchewan’s Snowmobile Association is to ensure the use of common sense and keep a clear head.
