Feb 3, 2023 | 3:35 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have named their three stars for the month of January, and it came as no surprise as to who was number one.

1st Star: Ben Tkachuk (10gp, 4G, 16A, 20pts)

Not a single player in the entire Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) registered more assists or points than the SJHL’s MVP of the Month.

Mustangs’ captain, Ben Tkachuk, averaged two points per game in January, finishing the month with 20 points in 10 games.

The Gronlid product had 16 assists to go along with four goals, as this was his first month of the season, with more than 10 points.

The 2002-born forward currently sits 10th in the league in scoring and is riding a six-game point streak.

2nd Star: Dawson Leroux (10gp, 7G, 8A, 15pts)

As for Melfort’s second star, he has a few things in common with Tkachuk, as he’s also a leader of this group (assistant captain), and he plays on the same line.

Dawson Leroux was the one who lit the lamp the most for the blue and green in January, doing so a total of seven times.

The Lethbridge, Alta., product had four multi-point games in January and has tied the team lead in goals with 20.

The 2002-born forward is also now tied for 11th in SJHL scoring.

3rd Star: Clarke Huxley (10gp, 4G, 7A, 11pts)

Meanwhile, the group’s third star is also an assistant captain and is the third and final piece that completes the Tkachuk-Leroux-Huxley line.

Clarke Huxley earned at least a point in eight of 10 games in the month of January.

The Calgary, Alta., product scored four times while adding seven assists, good for 11 points.

Last season’s Playoff MVP is now up to 28 points on the year, good for sixth on the team.

The 2002-born forward, along with his linemates Leroux and Tkachuk, were a true force for the organization to begin the year, wreaking havoc on any opponent that stood in their way.

Each player averaged over a point per game, as the squad started the 2023 year with a 6-3-0-1 record.
