Mustangs prepared for weekend swing against Stars and Klippers

Feb 4, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are about to set sail on their final second and final Western road trip of the season.

On Saturday night, the Mustangs will visit the league-leading Battlefords at the Access Communications Centre for the fifth and final meeting between the two clubs. Battlefords has won three of the four meetings, but their only loss came in a shootout in North Battleford on Oct. 14., the Stars’ first loss on the season. Three of the four games have gone to overtime, and the other was a 2-0 Battlefords win at the Warman Showcase.

Mustangs forward Boston Maxwell said the reason for their success against the Stars has simply been rising to the occasion.

“They’re a good hockey team and we’ve got to respect that,” he said. “But, we know what we can bring to the table and when we’re playing our best, there’s not many teams out there that can beat us, and we know that.”

Maxwell added that they’ve had a good week of practice and are excited for what is sure to be one of the games of the weekend.

“We’re ready for it,” Maxwell said. “We’re all excited to get going and we know it’s going to be a challenge.”

Battlefords is 38-3-2-1 on the year and has clinched a playoff spot already.

On Sunday, the Mustangs will head a bit further south and take on the Kindersley Klippers in the back half of the trip. Melfort lost their only previous meeting to the Klippers this season 7-4 back in October in Kindersley. It’ll also mark game two of the Fouillards Cup between the Mustangs and the Klippers.

Melfort is 23-12-5-2 on the season, good for 53 points. They’re just 2 points back of third place, and five points back of second place.

Both games this weekend can be heard on 105 CJVR.
