Mustangs looking to reset heading into weekend set with Terriers

Feb 10, 2023 | 9:00 AM

After a western road swing that went south, the Melfort Mustangs are back in action on Friday night for a weekend set with the Yorkton Terriers.

Last Saturday, the Mustangs fell 6-4 to Battlefords before falling 5-2 to Kindersley the next night as the team flipped a three-game win streak into a two-game losing skid.

Mustangs assistant captain Clarke Huxley said they needed to get back to the basics after what was a difficult weekend. They also need to exorcise some demons that have plagued them on the road as Melfort has gone just 2-4-0-1 away from the Northern Lights Palace in the 2023 calendar year.

“I think it’s between the ears, I think it’s just in our heads,” Huxley said. “It sucks getting off the bus and your legs are stiff and all that but I think it’s just in our heads, and we’ve got to get over that.”

Friday and Saturday will mark the third and fourth meetings between the two clubs who also met in last year’s first round of the SJHL playoffs, which Yorkton won. Each team has won one of the previous two meetings this season, with Yorkton winning the most recent on January 21 in Yorkton by a 3-2 score in a shootout.

That game also saw Mustangs goaltender Joel Favreau suffer a collision with Clay Sleeva of Yorkton, resulting in a three-game suspension for Sleeva. Favreau has not played since.

Huxley said there’s a bit of a rivalry now between the two clubs.

“Building off of playoffs last year, we still have a sour taste in our mouth,” he said. “Coming down the stretch these are big games, so there’s always a bit of animosity.”

Melfort is currently fifth in the SJHL, four points back of fourth, and eight points back of second place. Yorkton is looking to gain ground on Weyburn for the eighth and final playoff spot as they sit 10 points back in 10th.

Game time on Friday is 7 p.m. in Yorkton, while Saturday is 7:30 at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
