Special teams key in Mustangs victory over Ice Wolves

The Melfort Mustangs exacted a bit of revenge on the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday night at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

Less than 24 hours after a 4-2 defeat on home ice to the Ice Wolves, the Mustangs went up to La Ronge and earned a 4-3 win.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said they laid the body more, and got pucks deep better than they did on Friday.

“I just think any time you take lots of body out there and get more physical, I think you get more involved in games,” Meyers said.

Saturday was also a bit of a strange game as it didn’t see a single goal scored five-on-five.

Clarke Huxley and Ryan Duguay each scored powerplay goals for Melfort in the first period to get things rolling for Melfort. Ethan Strik added a powerplay goal for La Ronge late in the frame as well to make it 2-1 after one.

Zac Somers made it 3-1 for Melfort, on the powerplay, while Dylan Handel scored while the game was four-on-four to make it 3-2 after two periods.

Duguay’s second of the night was scored on a third period powerplay to give Melfort the 4-2 lead in the third period. Melfort would then kill off a few key penalties late including a double minor, which La Ronge scored once on to make it 4-3, but the Mustangs were able to weather the storm and hold on for the win.

With the Mustangs powerplay remaining hot, going four for eight in the contest, Meyers said they did a good job in tight.

“Just getting pucks through,” he said. “We took the goalies eyes away standing [Boston] Maxwell and [Wyatt] Cook in front of him and off the rebounds just putting it in the net.”

Joel Favreau stopped 31 of 34 in the win as the Mustangs improve to 28-15-5-3 and are back to within a point of La Ronge with two games in hand.

The Mustangs and Ice Wolves will meet again on Friday in Melfort, but prior to that, the Mustangs will meet Kindersley at home on Wednesday.
