Busy Weekend

Mustangs embark on final home stretch and Awards Banquet

Mar 3, 2023 | 9:00 AM

It’s about to be a busy, but exciting weekend for Melfort Mustang players, staff, fans, and families as the regular season winds down.

Melfort has just four games remaining on their schedule, two of which will be played on home ice this weekend. The La Ronge Ice Wolves come to town on Friday night in a matchup that will go a long way in determining home ice advantage in their likely first round series.

“This game against them is pretty important for [home ice advantage],” said defenceman Leith Olafson. “So, I think we’re pretty amped up for it.”

La Ronge holds a 3-2 season series lead, but the Mustangs sit one point ahead of their Sherwood Division rivals, and also hold one game in hand. Puck drop that night is 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Mustangs will step away from the Northern Lights Palace for their annual Awards Banquet where they will honour the graduating players, hand out some awards, and spend some time being together away from the rink. This will be Olafson’s second banquet, and he said it’s a fun evening to be a part of.

“Lot’s of parents are coming in to town, so guts get to see their parents, which is a good mental break before playoffs,” he said. “I think everyone is pretty excited about that.”

That will be followed by the final home game of the year for the Mustangs, and it’s shaping up to be a packed house as the Nipawin Hawks come to town. Not only will the Mustangs rivals be in town, but the organization is welcoming everyone to the game with free admission thanks to their game sponsor Prairie North Co-op.

Olafson said it’s exciting to think about how many people might show up and he encourages everyone to make it out to the game on Sunday afternoon for the 3 p.m. puck drop.

“When the Palace is rocking, it’s a lot of fun to play,” Olafson said.

Melfort and Nipawin have split the first four games of the season series.
