Mustangs move on with convincing win over Ice Wolves in game six

Mar 27, 2023 | 9:25 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have become the third team to punch their ticket to the second round of the SJHL playoffs after a convincing 8-2 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves in game six of their best of seven on Sunday night.

Melfort gave up the first goal of the contest, but scored the next eight goals to take charge in another game where they outplayed the Ice Wolves by a pretty hefty margin.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said they didn’t waver from their game plan all series.

“Just stick with the process,” he said. “The same right from game one, all we said was get the puck deep, get more pucks to the net, get in front of this goalie’s eyes. Smith did good, but he finally broke tonight.”

Dawson Smith stopped 34 of 42 in the losing effort.

After Jacob Visentini made it 1-0 Ice Wolves, the Mustangs tied it up with a Ben Tkachuk goal to make it 1-1 after one period.

In the second, the Mustangs really took charge and pulled ahead with a pair of goals from David Rioux, and one each from Wyatt Cook and Zac Somers.

Melfort added insult to injury in the third when Somers, Cook, and Evans added a couple more markers before Jacob Cossette added one last one for La Ronge.

With the series victory, Melfort will now play either Humboldt or Battlefords. Meyers said it will be nice to take a few days to heal up before their next matchup.

“We’re a little bit banged up, some sore shoulders and that,” Meyers said. “So it’s good to have these next five days off.”

Flin Flon and Estevan will play game seven of their series on Tuesday night. A Bombers win would set the stage for Melfort to take on Battlefords, while an Estevan victory would put the Mustangs up against Humboldt.
