Nipawin music festival going strong after more than 80 years

The Nipawin Music Festival wraps up on Wednesday with its final concert at LP Miller High School.

The event starts at 7 pm, and everyone is welcome.

“The Final Concert showcases the top performers of the Music Festival,” said Festival President Jamie Hildebrandt in an e-mail. “The performers are chosen by the adjudicators to perform at the Final Concert.”

She added it’s big relief to host a full-fledged event after years of pandemic restrictions. “Our current committee took over in 2019 and this is the first ‘normal’ festival as a committee,” she said. “We are very happy to be hosting the Music Festival again.”

Hildebrandt explained that in the spring of 2020, the festival was held virtually on Facebook.

In 2021, many restrictions were in place that few spectators were able to attend and in 2022 the festival was cancelled because restrictions were still in place.

Hildebrandt said there were over 70 competitors in everything from piano and vocals to guitar and violin. It started on March 27, with competitions lasting until March 31.

Hildebrandt also praised all of the volunteers involved in putting on the event.

“It takes a lot of work and a great group of volunteers to pull it all together,” she said, along with the support of many businesses and community members.

Three adjudicators were brought in to judge the different musical competitions. Nipawin’s Music Festival goes back more than 80 years.

“Nipawin Music Festival began in 1941,” said Hildebrandt. “Over the past 80-plus years the festival has seen many changes, but one thing remains – a love for music and the promotion of music education in our community.”
