‘We share, that’s what we do’: Food stolen from Melfort Food Bank

Apr 13, 2023 | 5:00 PM

Around 40 pounds of food was taken from the Melfort & Area Food Bank.

While this isn’t an incredible amount, the non-profit is disappointed someone would do this, when all the food bank want to do is help others.

“We share, that’s what we do,” said Ellen Zuck, the Food Bank’s secretary. “If people need food, they phone, and we’ll gladly set them up and give them some.”

All the food, which ended up being vegetables, cheese, french fries, and plant-based meat, was taken from an outside freezer the Food Bank uses.

“Maybe I shouldn’t put things out there, but sometimes I just don’t have room,” Zuck added.

This wasn’t the first time this freezer had food stolen from it. Last year, a bunch of meat was taken with the food bank reporting it to the RCMP. Zuck explained they weren’t able to help, mainly due to a lack of any leads, so they’ve decided not to call again and just take the loss.

Along with the freezer being broken into, the food bank recently caught somebody trying to steal food from their truck.

Zuck believes all these instances are symptoms of the same problem: extremely high food prices.

“It’s probably a big part of it,” she said. “We’re seeing it at all the stores, as well.”

While she sympathizes with those who are currently struggling, Zuck is urging anyone who needs help to reach out to them instead of stealing it from others.

Anyone looking to support the Food Bank, whether through donations or volunteering, can contact them directly.
