Former Bronco commits to U SPORTS hockey career

Apr 20, 2023 | 12:28 PM

The longest-tenured Humboldt Bronco has officially decided what his next step will be in his hockey and academic career.

Graduating defenceman Chase Lacombe has committed to Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.

The five-year Broncos’ veteran will suit up for the Lakers at the U Sports level for the 2023-24.

“We are very excited for Chase to get this opportunity with Nipissing. They are not only getting a great player, but a top-of-the-line character human being off the ice as well. His leadership and commitment along with his play is why he had such a long and successful career with 250 games of junior hockey,” said head coach and general manger, Scott Barney.

Lacombe joined the Broncos as a 16-year-old rookie in the 2018-19 season, where he played 41 games adding three assists and 104 penalty minutes.

Throughout the next three seasons, he would make the jump to the Western Hockey League (WHL).

From 2019-22, he would dress for 112 regular season and playoff games combined, between the Swift Current Broncos and the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Even though Lacombe spent the majority of that stretch in major junior, he managed to suit up for 21 contests in the green and gold, playing at least one game in five straight seasons.

“He’s one of the hardest players to play against that I have seen in my time in Jr. A. We are very happy for him to take this next step in his athletic and academic career at Nipissing and we wish him nothing but the best,” Barney added in a press release.

Over the course of his SJHL career, the Moose Jaw product accumulated 138 games while adding 22 points (2g-20a) and 289 penalty minutes.

Lacombe will now look to help his new team bounce back from a down season, as they finished with a 4-17-5 record in the Ontario University Atheletics (OUA) East Conference in 2022-23.
