Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medals

Multiple northeast people honoured by local MP

A total of 15 northeast locals were honoured this past Saturday in Tisdale.

Randy Hoback, the MP for the electoral district of Prince Albert, handed out Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medals (QEPJM).

According to a release sent from his office, in celebration of her reign, her service, and her commitment to Canada, Hoback honoured Queen Elizabeth II by honouring those in his constituency who have made their communities better.

The 15 recognized individuals were also deemed as those who have made contributions in any number of fields, which includes community service and leadership, business, arts and culture, sports, education, volunteerism, first aid/CPR and military service.

One of the 15 acknowledged was the Mayor of the Town of Nipawin, Rennie Harper, who told northeastNOW it was not only special to be part of an amazing group of people, but one that was also very familiar.

“It was terrific,” she said. “It does show you the diversity and the impact that every person in our communities, Melfort Tisdale, Nipawin, and the surrounding areas and RM’s, everybody has a strength to bring, nobody can do everything, but together we can do a lot.”

In 2022, the Government of Canada issued 60,000 medals to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, however, they did not do the same for her Platinum Jubilee.

Because of this, Hoback’s office commissioned Platinum Jubilee Medallions on their own, for presentation to those deserving in their constituency.

This also marks the last medals of their kind, after the Queen’s passing last fall.

Harper explained this added a special meaning to the award for her, based on previous life experiences.

“When Queen Elizabeth visited Saskatoon in 1957, they had school students from throughout Saskatoon as choirs at the event where she was, and I actually was very near to her on that occasion, so for me, (the medal ceremony) was really nostalgic and kind of surreal,” she said.

Other winners from Nipawin included Terry Posnikoff, Cathy and John Ukrainetz, and Jason Volke. Melfort winners were Lionel Lavoie, Ken Madraga, Tara Muntain, Dr. Eben Strydom, and Douglas Terry. Winners from Tisdale were Leanne Huvenaar, Trevor Norum, and Lynda Stromme. And, Gordon Joyes represented Codette as a winner, while Carlene Schmaltz was a winner from Carrot River.

Individual constituents were able to nominate people they believed were deserving of recognition for their contributions.
