Broncos load up on talent during SJHL draft

The Humboldt Broncos have their eyes on a few new bearers of the green and gold jersey for next year.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) held its annual draft on June 1 with the Broncos selecting 8th and 11th overall.

Round one started with 2007-born players with the Broncos choosing forward Rylan Hue from the Saskatoon Contacts and defenceman Ryker (Charlie) Nameth from the Lumsden Bethune Minor Hockey Association.

The Broncos were the first ones to grab a goalie from the stick pile with Grayson Malinoski from the Saskatoon Blazers U18 AAA squad being the 16th overall pick in the draft. This was followed by forward Kristian Lacelle from the Saskatoon Riverkings U18 AA team who went 23rd overall in round two of the draft.

Due to some valuable trades and a few passes from Barney, this would be all for the Broncos for their ‘07-born picks.

With seven graduating players from across the ice and a few more already taking on post-secondary commitments, head coach and general manager Scott Barney said they are looking at how to address some of those gaps.

“We’ve got some forwards, we’ve got some defense and a goalie, (it’s) good to be able to fill all those positions.”

For 2008-born players, Barney would add some more valuable names.

Forwards Luke Senick of the Saskatoon Bandits U15 AA and Shaan Basran of the Saskatoon Outlaws U15 AA were the Broncos’ picks in the first round, going 2nd and 11th overall. Defenceman Eli Johnson of the Regina Aces U15 AA and forward Cooper Ernewein of the Saskatoon Outlaws U15 AA were chosen in the second round.

Barney added he’s excited to see what these new potential Broncos have to offer with some staying with their current teams for one more season before joining the ranks of the SJHL.

They will, however, be invited to attend the Broncos’ fall camp before the upcoming season, along with many that have signed with the Broncos in the previous weeks, including Saxen Robertson, Marik Mamic, Connor Thue, Aiden Fisher, and former Bronco Landen Stromme who recommitted to the team.
